An electric chain hoist is a motor-driven lifting device that raises and lowers a load on a chain, hung from a fixed point or from a trolley running on a beam. To choose the right one in Sri Lanka, match five things: the rated capacity, the lift height, the duty classification, the power supply, and the working environment.
Quick answer: five checks before you buy a chain hoist
- Capacity: pick a rated capacity above your heaviest load plus the weight of slings, hooks, and any lifting frame.
- Lift height: measure from the hook at its lowest working position to the highest point you need to reach.
- Duty class: confirm the FEM or ISO classification suits how often and how long the hoist will run.
- Power supply: match the motor to your site supply, which in Sri Lanka is 230 V single-phase or 400 V three-phase at 50 Hz.
- Environment: check the rated temperature range and protection for humid, dusty, or coastal sites.
1. Choose the capacity with a margin
Add up everything the hook carries, not just the product. A pallet load, the sling set, and a spreader beam all count towards the rated capacity. Never plan to lift at the limit every day; a hoist working well within its rating wears more slowly and is easier to certify.
SAFCO supplies Kukdong KD-1 electric chain hoists from 0.49 to 2.0 tons and KD-2 hoists up to 5.0 tons. For hand-operated lifting, the KC-70A manual chain block covers 0.5 up to 50.0 tons. You can see the full range on our chain hoists and cargo lifts in Sri Lanka page.
2. Measure the lift height and the headroom
Lift height is the distance the hook travels. Headroom is the space between the beam and the lowest hook position when the hoist is fully raised. In low workshops the hoist body itself can be the limiting factor, so check both before you order.
3. Match the duty classification to the work
Kukdong electric chain hoists are classified FEM(1Bm) and ISO(M3). That classification suits workshops, maintenance bays, and intermittent production lifting. Continuous lifting across several shifts needs a higher duty class, so describe your real working pattern to your supplier rather than only the maximum load.
4. Confirm the power supply and lift speed
Check the motor voltage, phase, and frequency against your site supply before ordering. Single-speed Kukdong hoists are rated for 25% ED and dual-speed models for 20% ED, which describes how much of each cycle the motor can run. The table below shows the KD range.
| Model | Capacity | Lift speed (50 Hz) | Motor output | Test load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KD-1-0.5T | 0.49 t | 6.7 m/min | 0.8 kW | 625 kg |
| KD-1-1T | 1.0 t | 6.7 m/min | 1.5 kW | 1,250 kg |
| KD-1-2T | 2.0 t | 3.4 m/min | 1.5 kW | 2,500 kg |
| KD-2-5T | 5.0 t | 3.0 m/min | 3.3 kW | 6,250 kg |

5. Check the working environment
Kukdong hoists use Class F motor and brake insulation and are rated from -20 to +40 degrees Celsius, which covers Sri Lankan factories and workshops. For outdoor, humid, or coastal sites, tell your supplier so they can advise on protection and inspection intervals.
Electric chain hoist or manual chain block?
| Electric chain hoist | Manual chain block | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Frequent lifts, heavier loads, production and maintenance | Occasional lifts, no power available, tight budgets |
| Effort | Push-button pendant control | Hand chain, effort rises with the load |
| Speed | Steady motor-driven lift speed | Slower, depends on the operator |
| Power needed | Yes, single-phase or three-phase | None |
| SAFCO range | KD-1 and KD-2, up to 5.0 tons | KC-70A, 0.5 to 50.0 tons |
Safety, testing and maintenance
- Buy hoists that carry a recognised classification and are load tested before delivery.
- Use only original spare parts, and keep the load chain lubricated and free of twisted or stretched links.
- Inspect the hook, latch, chain, brake, and limit switches on a regular schedule, and after any overload event.
- Never lift people, never side-pull, and never leave a load hanging unattended.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a chain hoist cost in Sri Lanka?
Price depends on capacity, lift height, single or dual speed, and whether you need a trolley. The most reliable way to get an accurate figure is to send your load weight, lift height, and beam details for a quote through our contact page.
Can a chain hoist be fitted to a monorail or trolley?
Yes. Trolley variants (KD-1M and KD-2M) are available for every capacity, and SAFCO also designs overhead monorail systems that fit beam flange widths from 75 mm to 175 mm.
Do you install and service chain hoists in Sri Lanka?
Yes. SAFCO installs, maintains, and repairs chain hoists and cargo lifts across Sri Lanka, and every unit carries a one year manufacturer warranty.
